Exhibitions
Common Ground: 200 Years of Washington Park. Drawing heavily from the Albany Institute Library’s collections of ephemera and photographs, this exhibition is one of two commemorating Washington Park’s bicentennial. Exhibit runs May 4 - December 3, 2006
Picture Perfect: Photographs of Washington Park. The second exhibition that commemorates the bicentennial of Washington Park, this exhibition present a photographic essay of the park, featuring more images from the Albany Institute Library’s collections, as well as photographs collected from the community. Exhibit runs June 15 – November 5, 2006.
Flora, Fauna, & Fantasy: The Art of Dorothy Lathrop. Forgotten for over four decades, Lathrop is rediscovered as an important American illustrator in a new exhibition organized by the Brandywine River Museum, which opens in September 2006 at the Albany Institute of History & Art.
The Lathrop Artists of Albany. Drawn upon the permanent collections of the Albany Institute of History & Art, this exhibition will highlight the works of artist Ida Pulis Lathrop and her daughters Gertrude Katherine Lathrop and Dorothy Pulis Lathrop, each achieved national recognition for artistic contributions in the fields of painting, sculpture and illustrations of children’s books respectively. Opens in September 2006.
Frank Stella’s Moby Dick: The Waves 1985-89. This exhibition represents part of Stella’s extensive opus based on Melville’s classic, Moby Dick. The prints are in Frank Stella’s well-known abstract style, but also repeatedly feature imagery that can be read as a whale or a boat shape, or other descriptive forms and allusions that leave the viewer free to explore narrative and possible relationship to the text of the book. Each print is named for a specific chapter. Opening in September 2006, the exhibition will be one component in “Why Melville Matters Now,” a major symposium and celebration of the American literary giant Herman Melville being organized by The Albany Academy and the Center for Humanities, Arts and Techno Sciences at SUNY-Albany. Herman Melville is an alumnus of The Albany Academy, Class of 1837. Scholars from all over the country are expected to attend the three-day symposium in November, which will be held on the campus of the Academies. The Melville celebration will include programs in art and music, including this exhibition at the Albany Institute.
